On the a health sense it is important to relive gas. When it is done by accidentally without any warning (in your mind) it is polite to excuse yourself. Most people may react to the degree of the smell and usually a decent person would release a host of apologies.
What's important is a person is that he or she should release gas from their system, also it is best to consult a doctor to if too much is being release. The most caution way of being courteous is when people are eating, and that's when a person should make every effort to excuse him or herself and do their business away from the people and food.
God Bless

It's always rude to pass gas in company, but at an outdoors event you can probably take a few steps away from everyone (look at a nice rose bush, or something) and get away with it. If you're loud, take some more space; the sound isn't exactly pleasant either.

Just a general rule, it is rude to pass gas in the general vacinity of any other person. Just excuse yourself and pass your gas away from your friends, co-workers, or people standing in a line.

Oh believe me, they'll smell it! Intestinal gas has a way of not dispersing as quickly as other gaseous substances :)

If it's outdoors, I don't see why not. Just move off to the side, and let it out!
