Any thing that is to be considered "sound doctrine" must be free from contradiction.

Sound doctrine, within usually Christian circles, means a set of opinions that agree with, are in harmony with, the basic beliefs of a particular group.
For example, one such belief for, say a Fundamentalist type Christian group or denomination, would be the pre-trib rapture (the Christ will return for believers, who are pulled up into the air to meet Him and stay with Him, before the tribulation period begins, as described in the book of Revelation).
If you are sound in your doctrine, you agree with and believe every important point the group says is the truth.
It can be a subtle or not so subtle form of mind control when used negatively.
In the New Testament, sound doctrine meant pretty-much agreement with what Paul the Apostle taught and wrote in his peistles, to include James and Peter also.

Here are a few elaborations:

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 2Tim 4:3,4

"Sound doctrine, of course, is not the same as doctrinaire stubbornness, nor a facade for secondhand faith. Like a sound pillar, sound doctrine can uphold a house of many mansions, more spacious than our triumphant modem "little boxes" sitting on top of featureless, impersonal elevators."

But, by definition, a "doctrine" is a "a belief (or system of beliefs) accepted as authoritative by some group or school," and one that is "sound" is acceptable, free from moral defect, or well-reasoned.

A sound doctrine (spiritually) would be the belief in God, His teachings, and Christianity as whole, acceptable, and truth.

it means acceptable, in harmony, non-conflicting doctrines. I'll give you 2 samples of "unsound" doctrines:

First, Some say that there should be only one God, i.e., Jehovah, the Almighty God. Aside from Him..no one else.

But when you give proofs about Jesus' divinity, they will reason out that Jesus is a lesser god..the Mighty God.

So, in reality, they have two Gods: the Almighty and the Mighty God..and they dont have any belief that these two distinct Persons are one, unlike those from Trinitarianism, 3 distinct Persons but one God.

Second..some say that the Moral Law was abolished at the cross..but when you ask if its safe to kill somebody now, they will answer that there are certain provisions that remain.

See, this kind of doctrine is without sense and not in harmony. I hope this helps.

sound doctrine is doctrine that is based on the full balance of Scriptural teachings...comparing Scripture with Scripture instead of taking things out of context and building a doctrine that does not follow through with the rest of Biblical teaching. The example given by the Trinity above me, is an example of not allowing the Bible to speak for itself. For instance - the word "Trinity" does not occur in Scripture, however many instances throughout Scripture clearly teach the concept. Father, Son and Holy Ghost at the water baptism of Jesus is a classic example. People refuse the doctrine of the Trinity because they try to "understand" it completely in human terms. God cannot be understood in human terms - yet God gives us examples in nature to help us.....such as the "triune" egg --- one egg in three parts. Once you get past the mental natural mind "road blocks" of "how can this be" thought, it becomes very simple and practically "shouts" from the Scriptures.

Sound doctrine is based on Scripture. For instance, the trinity is not sound doctrine because it is not based on the Bible. The Bible says nothing about God being composed of 3 co-equal, co-eternal persons.

The trinity is a falsehood. It is not sound doctrine.

Sound doctrine is Bible based doctrine. It is not an altered or man made doctrine. The doctrine must fully coincide with the teachings of Christ and the Bible.

Sound doctrine would be doctrine that is fully supported by scripture. Much doctrine today is cut and paste or omits portions that it doesn't like.
