even if they call themselves the same name frequently?

If you're close to them, it's probably okay, but if you're a stranger then it probably isn't... even if it's not really derogatory, we just accept different things from close friends when it comes to nicknames, jests, puns, than from strangers. The reason being that when we say it ourselves, or a close friend says it, we *know* it's just in jest, while from a stranger or acquaintance we can't be so sure of that.

Yes. If I were to say I'm feeling like I'm gaining weight, that is not an invitation for my friends to call me fatso. The same thing goes for any name that one might call themselves, but would be offended if it came from someone else. Think of it this way: The "N" word has huge cultural differences in it's meaning because of it's origin. So if a person were to call himself that, he would know which meaning he intended. However, he doesn't know which meaning you intend, which makes it uncomfortable. The point behind manners is to ensure that everyone feels comfortable.

If this is referring to the "N" word; I'd say it's probally not a good idea. Stupid as it may sound, you have to own the right to say it. It's okay for people of the same backround to call eachother that name, cause their from the same place. But for someone outside the race to use that word would not be okay. They may find it insulting.

Not unless they have given you permission to call them that name. Best way is to try is once, and gauge their reaction, if they reply without hesitation you can ask them if it's ok to call them by that name, obviously if they ignore you or you get a filthy look, then apologise and say you won't call them that again.

Bottom line depends on what the name is!

Even if they call themselves the same name it doesn't mean that you're entitled to do the same.

Name calling is fine- for pre-schoolers. But it looks alittle stupid for anyone over the age of 5. There MUST be something alittle more important to talk about than ones opinion about someone else.

Yes, It is wrong, Unless it is their first name. It is wrong to call them wrong names and wrong to call them anything else but their first names. Didn't your parents teach you this growing up.

Simply ask them what name they'd like to be called. Then call them by that name.

Wrong. Definitely. If they call themselves a name and disrespect themselves, that's their problem.

I still won't disrespect them that way.
