It was very very bad. I was homeless for over 3 years. Try getting a job when you can't get a shower or find a place to sleep. It is hard to maintain your humanity because most people treat you like a diseased animal. The Catholic Church was one place I was able to go for help and other people were also occasionally nice but I found that most people can not see the difference between what a person has and what a person is. I survived that though and I hope i never see it again.

Yes, I have felt starved and had no money to eat - can't say I felt alone. I mean, mentally I was alone, but physically, there are always people around every corner. I had run out of money, lost who I thought were my friends, and the living family members I had left had turned me away.

I hitchhiked from California to New Jersey over a few days. Then I slept on the benches at random train and bus stations in Jersey. Some random people would try to give money to me - I tried not to take it when I could get them not to. For 9 days I did not eat - I just convinced myself I was on a fast. I went through all the typical experiences of a fast. After the 3rd day, I didn't have hunger pangs anymore, so things weren't too bad. By the end of that, I had about $20 saved up from donations that people wouldn't keep - I used this to buy some cheap rum and a bottle of ephedra (at that time you could get semi "pure ephedra"). Although, I just had a few clothes, my bag, and some ID, I did not want anyone to steal what was mine. I slept very little, hence why I did the ephedra, because I afraid of this........

As far as how it was, yeah, I would not recommend it .

Yes, although I'm proud to say that I'm in no danger of it happening again...I was a single mom, was working, but I was laid-off...so, had to go to the food bank...very embarrassing, the staff are very nice, but it was an eye-opener as to how poor people are treated (like they are lazy bums, who just suck money away from harder working people...) I only used the food bank for about 3 months, but it was horrible every time...no fresh anything, white bread, lots of high-sodium foods and processed foods...poor people get powdered milk too...nothing I could really feed my baby that would be nourishing...I would get into pleading matches for apples and bananas...or carrots!
Never again!!!

Close, but thanks to family and friends, my son and I didn't starve and never had to live on the streets or in a shelter.

I have done a fair amount of volunteer work at one of our local homeless shelters. It made me realize that no matter how bad off I thought I was, it could be worse. It made me appreciate my friends and family even more then I already did. Gave me a new perspective on life (and money).

yes, i have been there. I blame myself at that time. Cause i followed a guy who promised me everything. But instead, i lost my job, no place to stay, used to eat noddles once a day. I could only afford to eat once a day. I was lonely and i didnt have God in my life. But now i am much happier since i let Jesus into my life. I feel peace inside. Even if i am broke, somehow there's food on my table everyday. Praise God

It taught me that my identity didn't depend on how much money I had. I was still me and I liked me. I just happened to be broke at the moment.

Instead of eating the money, spend it on food

Yes, thinking back on it, it seemed like an adventure. I found out that if you're not too picky you can get by on very little.

Yes, but I wasn't alone. We did dig up some money for top ramen. I felt hungry. It's very distracting to feel so hungry. And you feel weak.
