Besides the obvious, I mean. Difference in sound? In durability? In price? Why would one be favored over the other?

Fiberglass timpani are much lighter than copper. They are also much less expensive. If you are using them to haul to the football field for marching band, I would reccommend them. If you are using them for a concert, I wouldn't ever use fiberglass.
Copper is the traditional material, and there are several kinds available. The cheaper copper timpani are lighter weight (and still sound better than fiberglass). A really good set of timpani will cost you an average of $10,000 a piece (less for the smaller, more for the bigger) and the largest one will weight upwards of 200 pounds. If you are a timpanist or a band director and can afford to go with high quality equipment, it is worth the money. Timpani are not a purchase that will lose their value as long as you take care of them. They are a good investment, and I promise you will hear a difference.

I was waiting to find out also. I'm sorry I don't know the answer. I'm sure a timpani made out of wood will have a better, warmer sound than one made out of fiberglass. The fiberglass will be much lighter as you already realize this I am sure. I hope this was some help.
