I'm flying out from Las Vegas going to Los Angeles for the weekend (Fri. to Sun.) end of this month and not planning on taking a luggage, but instead, I'm planning on taking my purse along with a backpack (use to be used for school) filled with enough clothes, a pair of dress shoes and a tooth brush (no liquid items) on board. Am I allowed to do this? Also, do you think I need to tell the ppl at the counter prior to getting my boarding pass? My first time flying Domestically and a bit confused as you can see.

I checked the guidelines already to what items you can carry on board. All I seen was purse would be considered one baggage and if he/she has a laptop would be considered two baggage, but in this case I'm taking my purse + backpack.

You can have one carry-on item which would be your backpack or a rollaboard suitcase or similar, and one "personal item." The personal item is your purse. So you are fine. If you wanted to take your laptop too, you could fit it into your backpack, or carry the laptop as an item and put the purse into the backpack.

I do this all the time. I travel a lot for work and take a small suitcase (rollaboard) with me but I also need my purse and my laptop. So depending on what else is in the suitcase, either the purse or the laptop goes inside the suitcase. I have all my stuff with me and never check bags!

And you do not need to tell anyone at the counter. You can print your boarding pass at home if your airline allows online checkin (most of them do) and go straight to the security gate!

Well as long as your backpack isn't too big it should be a problem. I often take the plane with a small suitcase and another with my computer inside and I never had any problem even though I'm supposed to have only 1 and that it should weight less than 10 kilos instead of 15 actually.

Almost everybody have 2 hand luggages and air companies don't say anything unless they are too big to be place in the plane

Have a good flight.

You're fine. I go to Hawaii frequently (the benefit of having a best frined who is a flight attendant) and all I take are two medium sized backpacks.

When you check in at the ticket counter the agent will ask if you are checking any bags. In this case your answer would be no. Many airlines will allow you to check in and print your boarding pass up to 24 hours prior to flight. Since you're not checking bags, you could do this and bypass the ticket counter and go directly to the security screening.

Have fun!

If you put your laptop in your backpack or purse, you'll be OK. (Obviously you'd need to have one large enough to hold the laptop.)

You don't need to say anything other than you're not checking any baggage.

Although I would recommend checking in online (you'll get your boarding pass and can avoid going to the ticket counter).
