My daughter is 5 and is in Kidnergarden. She has a stable home with a married mom and dad who never fight, a little sister whom she loves very much, pets, and just about everything a little girl needs. She's never sick, she behaves, and I, her mom, am a stay at home mom. So she has the attention of her parents all the time. She has an ear infection and is going to the doc tomorrow to get some medecine. BUT --- for 2 days now she's been crying a lot. She never cries! She says that the words she speaks stay in her head and songs stay in her head and she wants it to stop. She holds her head and cries. Today at a resturant she broke down in tears over it, got under the table, rocked back and fourth, and mumbled to herself. On the way home she tried not to cry as she asked us for a hug! After she got her tylenol she was much better, but still pretty sensetive. Should I be concerned or does it sound like five year old woes? I'm seeing her pediatrician tomorrow about her ear anyway...

Its probably just her having a slight echo in her ears because of the ear infection. No there is probably nothing whatsoever wrong with her mentally or emotionally, shes just a little girl who is frustrated about her ear infection and how she hears herself when she speaks. Think about when you were little. Didn't you get pissed and sad about the dumbest stuff? I remember i used to freak out when i put snow-boots on because they made my feet feel heavy. Get your daughter's ear infection treated pronto, and everything else should realign itself.

If she goes to the pediatrician and is diagnosed and treated for the ear infection I would not be concerned about these behaviors unless they were to continue after the ear infection is cleared up. Most likely her hearing is distorted and/or the pressure in the middle ear is causing some ringing or popping in her ear which may scare her. Some kids are more sensitive to pain than others. I would expect she will be back to her normal self once she feels better. If not, you could consider making an appointment with a child psychiatrist for an evaluation if you are still concerned.

Ask your pediatrician for a referral for an occupational therapy evaluation. It sounds like she might be getting overwhelmed with noise or the ear problems are just making noises louder and a problem. In either case I would make a point to have her evaluated after the infection is gone just to be sure that she isn't having issues with noises. Keeping your kids home where it's quiet and then putting them into a loud environment like kindergarten can be hard on them and you want to be proactive for her sake.

This could be due to the ear infection - infections in general let alone an ear infection can cause alot of stress for anyone. I wouls mention it to your pediatrition and see what they recommend.. even if you get a referel to a social worker or similar just for peice of mind, because you never know. Mental illness can happen to anyone and once diagnosed at an early age can be completely curable.. kepp this in mind and good luck with it all.... I know what its like I have three children and you worry sick....

The ear infection may be affecting her hearing. She may be getting noises that are not actual sounds, or hearing echoes.

Reassure her that its just her ear infection and mention it to the doctor.

She could have other issues but the ear infection should be ruled out first.

She's probably in serious pain. Children have difficulty describing their feelings in general let alone when in excutiating pain. It's confusing and they aren't sure what's going on. Poor thing see if the doc can see her sooner or at least ok you giving her Tylenol (though I'd recommend something without acetominiphin) regularly until she sees him/her.

Ear infections are ungodly painful. Psychosis doesn't set in in 5 year olds.

it sounds like its the ear infection causing her pain that is making her act out of sorts , as adults we dont really get them anymore and we tend to forget just how bad they really hurt
