I've always been curious as to what followers of the 3 Abrahamic religions believe about the eternal destination of those who commit suicide. Is damnation imminent? Is salvation possible? Is God merciful to those who kill themselves because of mental illness?

suicidal is not considered mental illness. It is your inability to comfort yourself from discouragement of something. that is unforgivable sin against God and Satan will laugh at and say , good for me I have convince you to kill yourself, come on . come with me to the darkness, follow me immediately before God may forgive you but I know you will not be forgiven.

Although I don't belong to any religious denomination now, I was brought up in a Catholic household. The Catholic view to suicide is that you will end up in limbo, supposedly the place between Heaven and Hell. Some also say that suicide committers directly go to hell.

In my opinion, if you kill yourself, you would have committed a murder. The only thing is, it's your own murder. Logically speaking, the punishment for murder should be the same for all murderers, whether you did it to yourself or to somebody else (unless where a lot of numbers are involved.) So whether they had a mental problem or not is not the case right here anymore.

Now to answer your question. According to the doctrine of the denomination I joined after my Catholic days, everyone (that is, all sinners) will have a chance to salvation. Please note the word "will." I am talking about a time in the future when every sinner will be resurrected to be given a second chance. It's pretty much complicated because I'm sure there are other questions popping out of your head right now. But to cut everything short, the only time when salvation is no longer possible, is when you reject this future salvation, this second chance that I just mentioned. And far from the eternal fires of hell, the punishment here is eternal death. Eternal death is the state where you no longer exist, and where your consciousness can no longer be brought back.

I know it will all sound weird to any who read this. I'm even kind of expecting that I will get a hundred thumbs down. But hey, I answered your question, and I have been candid about it.

Actually, I am a Christian, and I do not believe that suicides to to hell. I spent some time studdying the subject and have come to terms with it being the result of mental illness. As suich, I do not think that God punishes those so tormented in soul. God desires healing for His children , and is merciful to all in pain and suffering.
There is no biblical backing for the assumption of punishment for the suicidal one., God is a healer. The Church at large believes in the eternal punishment for suicide because of the belief that it is murder of self. It is an illness and God will not punish the sick. That would be like punishing an Alzheimer's patient fot their combativeness.

I was raised to believe that suicide was the greatest sin. Taking the life God breathed into you was unforgivable. However, as I have grown in my faith and explored this very issue, I no longer believe that.
I am a Christian and the Bible says that "once your name is written in The Lamb's Book of Life it can never be removed". Therefore, if you are "saved" you will be forgiven even suicide.
However, I must say, suicide is NEVER the answer. Things can seem unbearable and like there is no way out (I know, I have been there), but there is always a way to work through any issue. Reach out, there will be someone there to help you.

Some of the people here mentioned an "unforgivable sin". The only place we see that in the Bible is when it talks about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. And that is probably because if you push Holy Spirit away enough, then He'll leave you alone, and no one can come to God without the Holy Spirit prompting you to do so.

So since suicide is not considered an unforgivable sin, and Christ has paid the price for all of our sins, then once you're saved, you're safe, your sins have been forgiven.

P.S. I'm a Christian

I have a sister that killed herself so that may make my answer biased...

I believe that God is gracious and will save anyone if there's any possible way. I believe that Jesus' death was payment in full for a person's life. If you believe in him at a young age and later walk away I think God will still redeem them.

Now there are verses that say if you practice certain sins then you will not "inherit the kingdom of God" or some such. What does it mean by inherit? I believe that one can be saved but not experience everything God has. Both in this life and the one to come.

I do believe my sister made it to heaven. I think she made it by the skin of her nose and because God is gracious but I do believe she's there.

Now if you're asking because you're thinking of attempting, get help. Nothing is more devestating to loved ones than suicide. I know that first hand.

I have heard that suicide is the unforgivable sin. I can't find it in the bible anywhere. I believe that my God is a merciful God and that those who can not bear the wight of the world are forgiven. However I believe that suicide is cheating life. There is wonderful life in all of Gods children, our gift to Him is living it till He calls us home. I have been to that dark place of just wanting to end it all. But I believe in fighting, fighting until whatever was causing me to doubt myself just gives the he%% up and leaves me alone. I believe in winning, and being a credit to myself and God. God forgives and holds His children close.

I am a muslim. We believe that the act of suicide is truly wrong and no one should commit this. we believe that ur punishment will be hell. Of course no one knows who goes to hell or heaven but Allah, (God.) but this is what the Holy Koran says. Um, it is also noted that people with mental illness if they were born crazy and they cannnot control thier actions and do not know right from wrong they go straight to heaven. And Allah Knows Best .

Nope, Suicide is the ultimate act of selfishness, but salvation is in God hands and not even you can take it back from God even by a sin of this nature.
