do you form and/or convert the romaji of it in your head?

I read hiragana and katakana when i was in senior high school.I also learn how to write it and i think it's very fun to learn that and i confess that first time learn it i think it's very difficult but when i learn it i realize that it'snt so difficult.i enjoy learn that.for example i tell you some japanese language like: itadakimasu means "let's eat"sayonara means "good bye",ohayo gozaimasu means "good morning" sensei is calling for teacher.if you really seriuos to learn it it's gonna be fun.Trust me.

You're obviously asking the question because that's what you're doing and you want to know if you're strange. Naturally, when you begin to learn hiragana and katakana that is how you will do it. Gradually, as you see them more and more, the pronunciation will come quicker, and you'll no longer have to think in Latin letters. Kind of like $ or %. You've seen them so many times, you no longer need to think of what they represent. It will take time, but the more you read, the faster it will come

i agree with what DS has said, that after awhile the meaning is just "there" and you don't need to convert...although in general it is better to avoid romaji, as it can make you a lazy reader, especially with katakana, and can tend to confuse you when writing, especially if the romanized version omits the long "o" sound, or the small "tsu" in translation....

No as that's just a way to make comprehension a slow and painful process. I try to avoid romaji all together as it's difficult, varies from person to person, and doesn't help much in the real world.
