No. A parakeet is not officially a parrot. They are a member of the Psittacine group; but not officially parrots.

The smallest parrot is the parrotlet.

Parakeets are small parrots.

A parrot is any bird of the order Psittaciformes. There are about 600 species of parrots, and they include the smaller versions, the parakeets. Other kinds are the cockatoos, the macaws and the lories. And many more.

Parakeets are types of parrots that are small with long, slender tails. The most common parakeet to most people is properly called the budgerigar or budgie. These are the lovely little birds found in most pet stores. There are many other kinds of parakeets, though, including grass parakeets, quaker parakeets (also called quaker or monk parrots). Cockatiels are technically considered parakeets, too.

Most people call budgies parakeets and don't realize that there are many kinds of parakeets-- and that all parakeets are parrots.

Generally speaking a parakeet has a long tail, and a parrot a shorter more blunt tail. Same with Lories vs Lorikeets. Technically there are lots of parakeets. Ringnecks, Rosellas, ect... are considered parakeets. In the US budgies are called parakeets, but the rest of the world calls them budgies. Any bird that's feet are two toes forward and two back that has a moveable upper mandible is considered a parrot...budgies...cockatiels, cocktoos, lorikeets, as well as macaws and conures etc....are all parrots

there isnt really, parrots are the bigger versions like african grey, macaw. And parakeets are small version like conure's, ringnecks, love birds, cockatiels etc.

Heather above me is wrong, both have the ability to talk. Ringnecks are excellent at talking.

Parrots are large, parrakeets are small usually with long tails, e.g. budgies and turquiosines.
Otherwise they are quite similar in appearence and personality
