Violence is actually OK if it is the good guy's kicking the bad guy's b***.
But violence becomes wrong when it is *gratuitous* - that is, when it is more explicit than is required to make the point| It is the same with sexuality, sexuality is not necessarily wrong to be portrayed, but it is wrong if a sex scene is added that does nothing for the plot (which is typical of Hollywood), or if there is more explicitness than is needed to make the point, or if immoral sexual activity is presented as if it were good.
An example of a gratuitous violence was in the movie "Saving Private Ryan" which had such gore and horror on the battle field, that the only point of the movie was to show fighting in a war as being so horrible, that people would be reluctant to take up arms to defend their country or whatever else they hold dear, and just lie down before the invader|
An example of appropriate violence was in the Movie "The Matrix," where the heros go in there with all guns blazing, but there was nothing excessively graphic about it|

Of course they can, violence isn't necessary. Humor and the like do well too.

Of course they can. But, maybe that's only chick flick movies. Maybe men think they have to have the road races and the bombs exploding and people beating each other's brains out.
