Installing a fresh copy will remove all data on the C drive, or on the partition yoou want to install. You do not need to format from dos prompt. WinXP has onscreen facility to do the repartitioning and formatting. First boot from the windows installation disk.
When the installation cd detects your computer hardware and stop at a screen. Press Enter to start Installation. Then press F8 at the next screen to agree the licence agreement. In the next window you can delete existing partitions. By selecting the partition by arrow keys and pressing D, press L to confirm, delete all the partitions you will get one single unformatted space.
Now create new partitions in the unpartitioned space. Press C to create new partitions. When all unpartitioned space has been converted to new partitions, select the uppermost c drive, or c partition to install windows on. It will be automatically formatted and the instalation will continue.
You can format the remaining partitions after the installation is over

What kind of computer do you have? If you bought it at the store it should have a restore CD hat will help you reinstall everything. If the PC was your's and you have the XP CD, thats all you need. Back up any data you want to keep. If theres nothing there you want forget about it.

Insert the CD and reboot. let the computer boot from the CD. Follow the prompts. The XP CD will ask you if you want to format. say yes. The XP CD will start to format the drive and instal the filles it needs to continue. From there the computer will do thr rest. Just follow the prompts. Make sure you have the correct CD KEY before start or you'll be stuck. If you need more help, message me.

1. First, make sure that your computer is set to Boot to CD. This is a different procedure depending on your computer. When your computer first boots look for an option to enter the BIOS settings. Under the BIOS settings find the "Boot Order" and make sure the CD-ROM is set to boot first.

2. With the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive, save your BIOS settings and exit.

3. If you've done everything correctly you should be asked to "Press Any Key to Boot from CD".

Boot from CD

4. After installing the necessary setup files, Windows XP will display your partitions. Delete any existing partitions by selecting the desired partition with the arrow keys, press D to delete and then L to confirm the deletion.

Delete Partition

5. You should now have only one option, "Unpartitioned Space". Press Enter to install Windows XP to the unpartitioned space.

Create Partition

6. When asked how you would like to format the partition, select "Format using the NTFS file system".

Format Partition

7. After the partition is formatted, Windows XP will begin installation. The computer will reboot. While the computer is rebooting, please do not touch any keys.

Begin Installation

8. Enter your product key.
9. When asked for Network Settings, choose "Typical Settings".
10. Windows XP will now complete installation. Upon completion you will need to re-install the drivers for your hardware (Modem, Sound, Video, etc).

Do you have a full install or an upgrade edition of XP to re-install? If you only have an upgrade edition, then formatting from a command prompt on a bootup disk is not recommended, as this will erase all traces of the previous existing OS - making your 'upgrade' edition unusable.

If you want to install a new copy of Windows, it's best to insert the disk and set the BIOS to boot from CD-ROM first. Then, when prompted, tell the system to format the existing partition that Windows is located on and install a fresh copy.

Disconnect from the internet.

Go to C:\documents and settings\your profile folder name\local settings\my documents
Copy that folder to a DVD/CD disk that is your data! Go into your e-mail and look for the EXPORT function! Export your contact list to a folder that YOU CREATE. Copy that folder to a CD/DVD.

Get all of your system cd and registration numbers together!

READ THE SCREEN!

Reboot with WINDOWS CD, select NEW INSTALL.

Delete all partitions, create two partitions, one 20GBs, and Format that partition in NTFS. Windows complete installation, install motherboard utilities and drivers from motherboard cd. Install all other hardware/software drivers. Install anti virus and fire wall last.
Shut down system, reconnect Network.

If you use a closed-box system (one you didn't build yourself), you should have a "Restore CD" of some sort that came with the computer. Just pop that in and follow the instructions.
