I understand why you have to have your seatback up but why the blinds? How much of a difference can they make? The flight attendants have to be in the front of the plane so it's not like they're looking out the windows, and besides, in the event of a crash wouldn't they act as a buffer between you and the broken window?

I asked my husband that before.

He said the reason is because i the event of an emergency, your eyes can better acclimate to the outside brightness, or darkness and you'll be able to see.

If you have the windows down and there is an emergency, your eyes are not going to have enough time to get accustomed to the light or lack thereof outside.

Most crashes happen during either takeoff or landing. If the blinds are down, you will not be able to see out the window--- which means you may try to use an exit that is blocked by fire or debris. With the shades up, all passengers can see clearly if the closest exit is passable. I couldn't imagine trying to turn half the people around and use another exit!

It is also, as another poster stated, to make sure your eyes are adjusted to the natural lighting outside, which helps in an evacuation, and so that you can see which way is "up".

no, its got nothing to do with crashing, trust me in the event of a crash i highly doubt that an 8th inch think piece of flimsy plastic will make much of difference. Its so that anyone sitting next to you (assuming you don't know them) that might want to watch the landing can, that way the flight attendant doesn't have to worry about people getting into disputes about it or anyone getting out of their seat to open a shade up to watch. now they just make it protocol
