How frustrating! I watched the demo at http://office.microsoft.com/training/training.aspx?AssetID=RC011356771033. I marked my body text, level 1 and level 2. Now, when I go to Insert > Reference > Index and Tables it asks me if I want to replace the selected TOC, I click yes and nothing happens.

The whole point of the software is to make your life easier. If you find it easier to just put in the proper page number rather than reference a particular point in your document, then do that. Good luck!

Sometimes WORD tries to pull the TOC from Styles, rather than marked text. Go to Insert > Reference > Index & Tables > Table of Contents tab. Select Options and make sure that Table Entry Fields is selected. You may also want to deselect Styles and Outline levels if there is a conflict.

To include chapter headings only in a Table of Contents format them as Level 1
To include sub section headings in the Table of Contents, format them as Level 2
You can choose how detailed you want the Table of Contents to be by assigning further levels to section or paragraphs headings.

To insert the Table of Contents place your cursor at the start of the document. Click on the Insert menu and choose Index and Tables. Choose the Table of Contents tab.

At 'Show Levels' choose whether you only want to show the Chapter headings only, by toggling the number to 1 or if you want to show the sub section headings as well toggle it to 2. If you have further level headings toggle it to the required number.

Click OK and your Table of Contents should be inserted.

To update any changes to the TOC after you make any modifications, click on F9.
