Yes, they can, it is practicly the same thing. YOur result is the same pretty much, alot of it is the seasonings that you put in your beans. Good luck and I hope they turn out good :)

here is a recipe

Refried Beans
Use to fill tortillas, adding grated cheese, chopped fresh vegetables and salsa to taste...

 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
 1 tsp. ground coriander
 2 onions, chopped
 chili powder to taste
 4 cloves garlic, crushed
 18 oz (500 gm) cooked red kidney beans
 1 tsp. ground cumin

Heat the oil and add the onion, garlic, cumin, coriander, and chili if used. Stir fry 2 minutes. Add the beans and stir until everything is heated through. Mash some of the beans if you wish.

Note: I usually fry the onion until it is soft and cooked through. If you fry it for only 2 minutes, it tends to stay undercooked and a bit too strong in flavour.

epicurious.com has a great refried bean recipe with black beans. It has green onions, and be warned, it has lard. But I love it much better than pintos, and I like pintos!

Yes, but black beans would probably be a better substitute.
