Do you guys believe that John the Baptist was a real prophet? And do you guys believe in the same prophets as Christians..if so then the one huge difference is whether Jesus was the Son of God or not?

Many of the same prophets are in the Koran (Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Elijah, Moses, Aaron, John the Baptist, Joseph, etc.). The stories are abbreviated though and quite changed.

Concerning Jesus, the difference doesn't have to do with sonship. Muslims don't understand what that means (they think it means that God had sex with Mary). Sonship means that Jesus had authority on earth. (Just like my son has authority to do things in my name. Everything that belongs to me, belongs to him). He healed the sick, cast out demons, brought back the dead, (created a bird in the Koran), knew the future, controlled the weather, forgave sins, didn't sin himself. Though most of these things are in the Koran (again though, very abbreviated), the Koran is clear to say that it was by "God's permission" that he did this, not because he was anything different from any other prophet. Jesus in the Koran is just a prophet like all the other... or so Muslims say.

The interesting thing about Jesus in the Koran is that He was also born of a virgin (so didn't inherit the sin of his father), and was pure (sinless). He also, in the Koran, ascended to heaven and will return one day. He is called "Mercy" by God. Mohamed on the other hand died like all of us and sinned (the Koran said that God forgave him of his sins). He also himself said that he is only a messenger and a warner and doesn't know what will be done with him or his followers. So, who will intercess for us on the day of judgement? The Koran says that Jesus is for all the people of the world, not just for the Christians. So who will intercess for us all on the day of judgement? Only Jesus can do it. No one that himself sinned can intercess for another.

The way I see it, Mohamed only came along to point the Arab pagans to the one God. He was quite a military and political leader though too, so he ended up with an empire and have created a whole NEW religion. Muslims are supposed to also read the other books (the Injil and the Torah), but they refuse to our of pride and hatred for the Jews (all previous prophets were Jews). Sura 4:136. The are spiritual descendants of Ishmael, the rejected son of Abraham, so they are quite angry. There is a prophecy about them in the Bible saying that God will make Ishmael into a great nation and they will be wild people.

Even though I used to be Catholic, I don't know who John the Baptist is.

Yes, in Islam, we believe in all of the same prophets, as God has sent mankind many prophets to guide us. God sent one last prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him), and one last holy book, the Qur'an. God has promised us that the Qur'an will never be changed.

Yeah, the biggest difference is that we believe that Jesus (pbuh) was a prophet, not the son of God, nor God Himself. The bible has been changed by people, so it's not God's message to us anymore (some of it might still be, but so much has been changed that we cannot follow it as God's guidance for us).

The Holy Qur'an clarifies all of these issues. There's even a chapter called "Maryam" (Mary), which tells us about Mary the mother of Jesus and Jesus's birth (peace be upon them both).

Also, Yahya was Zakariya's son.

Yes we believe John the Baptist was a Prophet but he is known to us as Prophet Yahya. And yes The MAIN difference between The religions is like what the person above me said that its the role of Jesus.

We believe he was one of our Prophets whereas Christians Believe he is the son of God or IS God. (i never understood that part)

as what the girls answered, prophet yahya (john)...

jesus (prophet isa) is another prophet in islam, but he is the top 5 high-leveled prophet (just to make things clear - sorry for the fancy discription) and prophet muhammad (s.a.w) is the highest prophet of all carrying the title rasullullah (messenger of allah)

we did not deny what happened to jesus nor we deny that he was killed (he's in heaven with allah till doomsday arrive) but christianity started after jesus's death...

and yet...

there are other beliefs at that time which is the same beliefs b4 christianity and it survived till muhammad came about and officialize it as islam
(in the quran, anything b4 islam is known as god's religion - except christianity, which was highlighted as a deviant act)

so, no... jesus is another messenger of Allah
and YES, he will come back to bring us to salvation
but Allah does not have a son nor a father
He is all knowing, all powerful, the beginning, the end, the infinite...

salam!
