It's great that you have plenty of time to make a decision!
I think a beagle would make a great playmate for a lab. They're both such goofy, easygoing, playful breeds.
Just be cautious: beagles are such a popular breed that there are a lot of careless breeders out there and you could end up with a sickly or ill-tempered dog. The best sign of a good breeder is that she's very picky about you because she wants what's best for her dogs more than she wants what's in your pocket.
Also because beagles are such a popular breed, there are tons of really good ones of all ages in rescue. We adopted an 8yr old beagle 2 years ago and he's just wonderful -- he's great with our son, gets along beautifully with our ridgeback, is well-behaved and obedient, and is just the funniest, cutest lil guy. Only downsides: I hope you like barking and having to guard your food like a piece a candy in a kindergarten. ;)
Good luck!

Beagles are pretty hardy so I don't think a lab playmate should be a problem. I must warn you though that beagles have very high strung hunting instincts and need a lot of exercise. They also have a tendency to wander off in search of a scent's source.

They should get along fine together. I've never known a Lab to not get along with any dog, they are so naturally good natured. And they would be great playmates.

A beagle would be a great mate for the lab. My golden lab used to play with a chihuahua (if you imagine it. )

They work fine together. I have a purebred beagle, and a lab/beagle. Beagles tend to be very stubborn, and have attitudes. Can be tough to potty train to, but with consistancy, it does happen.

I have a Lab/Pointer mix and a JRT/Beagle mix. They're best buds and their energy levels are similar so they tire each other out.
Beagles tend to have big mouths though, something to keep in mind....

they would be fine together, if ya have the time and energy to handle the two of them, that lab puppy is going to be powerful so in the beginning id watch close, once the lab realizes if he plays ruff he can''t play it will balance out, but they need supervision

Any dog would be fine, really, as long as you are a good owner and trainer.
Try a mutt.
