The antis hate guns because of ignorance and cowardice. The politicians mainly on the Democrat side know guns are the only thing that keep them from having total control over the people.
I'm an Illinois resident as well and I'm sure you know about SB0016 that's at the senate level right now.The Democrats are trying to ban semi auto shotguns and rifles..
It has failed the last few years.. but with more democrats at the state level this time it may pass.
My advice contact your senator and voice your opinion. If you can make it to Springfield on the 14th for gun owners lobby day do that as well..

There are not as many as you think. Most people are apathetic about guns. It's the elected officials that use gun violence to score political points and SOMETIMES get elected (most stay away from the topic due to voting day ramnifications). Minorities (anti-and pro-groups) make a loud noise. The gun debate is a war between cadres of diehards. The media plays to our fears on everything (guns included). People might say they support gun control, but really they want it for SOMEBODY ELSE-not themselves. Unfortunately for them, this is not how gun laws work, so it's wrong to think this way. If we had an anti-gun majority in America, things would have been different already from what they are right now. And ignorance of how guns are employed outside of the realm of killing does not help, to say the least.

Ignorance has a lot to do with it. People tend to be afraid of things they don't understand. There are a lot of people out there who are reasonably open-minded but a little anti-gun. When I've had the chance to educate them, they've pretty well all changed their minds. The Clinton-era "assault weapon" ban was a case in point. Those who supported it generally thought they were banning selective-fire assault rifles. There are also a lot of people who think it would be possible to disarm the criminal element, not realizing how easy it is to manufacture a firearm that would be suitable for criminal purposes in a backyard shop (I did this as a kid and managed not to blow myself up). And finally there are huge misperseptions about what guns are used in crime. So many movies and TV shows feature fully automatic weapons that it's a general public misperception that these weapons are common.
We gun owners also don't help our cause much. Non-gun people almost never see my side-by-side 12 bores or my non-scary-looking hunting rifles, but middle-aged overweight guys in camo flaunting their Glocks and AK's in populated areas are somewhat intimidating. There's a difference between arguing for the 2d amendment and pushing it in others' faces.

People who are anti-gun are that way because they believe and repeat what they hear without looking at facts objectively and drawing logical conclusions. Who would not agree that children being killed in gun accidents is tragic? However, a child is more likely to be killed by accidental drowning in a backyard swimming pool than by a firearm in the home. Should back yard swimming pools be banned? That is the logical conclusion if we are to follow their arguments. Where are these shootouts in the streets that the anti-gun activists talk about? They are very rare and involve criminals, not gun collectors and citizens who own weapons for personal protection.

I have spent most my life in academia. I got in debates about guns all the time. I smashed the people who debated me. The people got frustrated and I was even called an "intellectual bully". And yet, I don't think I changed anyone's mind.

I can, however, think of several times when I took an anti out to the range and while we were driving home they were talking about buying an AR-15 or a handgun. I have changed more minds by going to the range than by saying anything.

Thus, the way to protect our rights is to get people to the range and make sure they have fun (leave the 44 at home).

"If guns kill people, I can blame misspelled words on my pencil"
-Larry the Cable Guy

That is the best way that it can be put

These people were at one point told that guns kill people when, like you said, people do. If someone is going to kill someone they will find a way to do it gun or not...Yes, there are accidental gun deaths, but everyone of them could have been prevented by following the very very simple gun safty rules. If anyone can state a situation where an accidental gun death or injury could not have been prevented I would be glad to prove you wrong.

I have a theory, but it's pretty out there. Flame away.

Educated, urban-dwelling white folks who consider themselves 'progressive' are the ones leading this charge. For the most part, they don't hunt and they don't 'like' guns.

They are also the people who think the government knows better than most people (read: less educated and 'sophisticated' than they are) about how to live their lives.

The thought of dark-skinned folks who may live in their cities owning firearms frightens them. They can never say this, because that would go against their liberal views, but they think it none the less.

Even more horrific to these people, and the real source of their anguish, is that other white people who mostly live in the suburbs and small towns and in the country represent the majority of gun owners.

These people are much less 'sophisticated', they are less educated and less progressive, they are usually more religious and more patriotic and more stable in the traditional family structure. Urban liberals despise these people, so it's OK to call them bigoted names and be dismissive of their values, because they are, in their view, what keeps America from 'moving foreward', whatever that may be.

A lot of these folks hunt too, so they team up with the poor misguided souls who think that 'meat is murder' and that animals have rights.

Basically, the thought of people in the ghetto with arms and 175 Million working class white people with AK-47s intimidates them..... and prevents them from building their great socialist society they are hoping for. So they will use any reason, any excuse and any disaster or emergency to disarm the population.

Save your money or borrow it, but stock up on guns and ammunition, preferably ones that you buy for cash and without documentation. Get an AK or a M16.

I pray the day doesn't come, but it's better to be prepared. Every single people who have had their government take away their right to self-defense and self-determination have also seen that goverment take other rights as well.

Now, if you don't mind I'm going to pop open a cold one, clean my guns and watch "Red Dawn" on DVD. LOL!

Thank the Liberal Media and antigun activists that go crazy any time a gun is used in the commission of a crime. People forget that the Second Amendment isn't about hunting, it's about keeping the government honest. The only cure I can think of is to get as many conservatives into the major media as there are liberals now. The Sheeple will follow whichever 'shepherd' has the loudest voice. Even if there's a wolf under their skins.
