I noticed an advertisement on Myspace today that said something like 80% of kangaroo dogs are dying too young. I don't want to click on it for fear of being phished. What the heck is it?

Hi Petcreatures78.
The Kangaroo Dog is or was a specifically Australian lurcher, not a pure breed of dog. Historically it was a cross bred variety, specifically designed to hunt kangaroos, originating from mixed breeding of Greyhounds, Scottish Deerhounds, Borzoi and other thoroughbred sighthounds as well as working dog breeds.(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Ok i have never seen a roo dog that looks like the one sweetchildvc found. Most kangaroo dogs are dingo crosses, usually to the point they look nothing like the other breed they are crossed with. They originated from the native dingo breeding with rural station working dogs, such as blue heeler, red heeler, kelpie and other aussie dogs. They have since cross bred with other pets as homes got closer to bush land. They arent really a breed but a generic term for a dingo cross. They are popular on native aboriginal reserves, stations and in camps. There is an aussie saying 'you cant fatten a roo dog', in reference to a thin person who cant gain weight. They are usually a thin, medium sized dog with a high energy level, they usually are the dingos buff coloring, upright ears, curled up tail. With the dingo having less genetic variations, pups from crosses usually resemble the dingo.
