The first few days it was so bad I stayed home from work. I went to the doctor. The rapid strep test said negative, and the 24 hour one said 'minimal' strep. I took penicillin for a week, and it did not completely clear up.
I went to the doctor again, and both strep and mono tests turned out negative.

Symptoms: fatigue, soreness swallowing/moving tongue
The soreness is usually worse in the morning and later in the evening. Since this started, I've had about 3 days where the throat didn't hurt at all.

I'm wondering if maybe I had strep to begin with which the penicillin cleared up, but perhaps I have something else or I am having an allergic reaction to something? I can't think of anything in my environment which has changed recently.

Please, there has to be some competent person in the medical field out there. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I had this myself, beginning around February 1st, sore throat so painful that even swallowing saliva was a chore. I too did the whole antibiotic route, TWICE, over a period of a month. The first course took care of the swelling on the left side of my throat, the second course of antibiotics for the return of the left side swelling and the migration to the right side. Also seemed to work for about 2 weeks. But I am now experiencing pain again in my throat. Not as bad as those first two, but annoying.

I have found that using Chloraseptic spray is about the only thing that I can use (especially when the pain was really bad) to numb my throat enough to allow me to eat and drink.

Unfortunately, I think that this is the nature of this year's cold--a real b*tch that hangs on, mutates, and hits us again. Ride it out and take pain killers when necessary, and use that Chloraseptic in order to eat and drink, and it will eventually go away.

You should have taken the penicillin for 10 days, but since you were not feeling any better after taking it for a week it probably would not have made a difference,
My DR always gives tetracycaline for sore throat not penicillin, and it works. But the choraseptic is the best otc thing you can get -you may have to constantly spray your throat but it will numb it. also gargle as often as you can with warm salt water-this really feels good , although it is not a cure it is soothing.

If you are not happy with your doctor, go to another one, or ask to see an ear, nose, and throat specialist
