You will only need a passport if you are a citizen of a country that is not USA.

The whole point of a passport is for INTERNATIONAL travel. Did you not know that? Of course if you're going to Texas maybe you didn't know that.

Naw, we'll probably look at y'all kind of funny; being from California and all. You won't need a passport as long as you plan on leaving again.

Not unless you're not a US citizen. You do need a piece of government-issued ID (a driver's license), but you never need a passport to travel within the US.
