It just pisses me off when i am driving at night and people either drive behind me or driving towards me with their lights on to maximum capacity and it hurts my eyes. Why the heck do ppl do that when there is no purpose? Anybody else frustrated about or can explain to me why the heck do people do that?

As my Aussie friend said, it is against the law(In Illinois) to drive with High Beams on. They must be dimmed 500' approaching an oncoming car, and 300' when approaching a vehicle in front of you. Blinding someone with High Beams is dangerous and can cause an accident.

Having lights on your vehicle makes your vehicle easier to see, as well as making it easier for you to see while driving. Many vehicles are coming with automatic lights as standard equipment, so they have lights on at all times while the engine is running. This is also the law in some areas.

As far as the high beam setting goes, I think drivers are just conditioned not to think about their high/low setting unless it's night time and they can easily see the difference.

I noticed this depends on the landscape of the area where you drive. People living on flat landscapes tend to abuse their high beam, people in the mountains tend to show much better courtesy to fellow drivers.
