Allegra, or Claritin I find are better. I too have really bad allergies. Thank God they're not all year round. If your allergies are limited to a certain time of the year, start taking them earlier in the season. Some times you do have to take more than one . I take 2 the first days, and then one each day.
When things are really bad I'll take Loratdine ( reactin, claritin) in the day and Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl) at night. They work differently to combat the allergy . I would check first though if you want to take it everyday. I had to get 2 lymph nodes removed after taking one med everyday for 2yrs. They are not tested for everyday use.

I did it for a few months. I moved into an apartment that had carpet. My allergies were really bad, so I would take a Benadryl at night. If I took it during the day, I'd end up falling asleep, and missing class. I hate the claritin, I find it never works, though it's recommended for daily use. I stopped taking Benadryl every night, I became dependent on them. I thought I couldn't sleep with out them. I still take a Benadryl if I have a reaction to something, or my allergies are really flaring up. I have to make sure I'm not babysitting, or at school. The drowsiness really affects me, insanely. I was kicked out of a mall once, the security thought I was high. That's my experience with taking Benadryl daily. :P

The non-drowsy(claritin) isn't as strong so it won't make you sleep.

Good luck,

-.-'

Is Benadryl Safe

I take it on a daily basis and have for 5 years I take 25mg. twice a day it is all that the doctors will let me take due to my other meds. I do take the generic equivalent and it works just as well. I have tried all of the newer allergy meds. in the past that are on the market and nothing has ever worked as well as benadryl.

Yes. My mom has severe allergies all the time and I have inherited them. What really kicks the allergies is an Allegra, A benadryl, and a presciption decongestant called deconasal. These in combonation make you feel great when your allergies get you down.

Have you tried Claratin? It won't make you so drowsy. I know Claritin is ok to take every day. Benedryl does not work for me and it makes me hyper for some reason. It is safe but the side effects would be a pain.

I looked through 2 of my drug books and the only thing it says for use is that its for temporary relief. The generic name for Benadryl is diphenhydramine. Usually the drug books, say wether or not to use it for more than so many days. But, either way, I wouldnt use it everyday unless you absolutely have to.

I did it from the age of 3 til probably like- 14. Honestly- I'm not sure if it helped. I was still always sneezing and stuff anyway. try something like Allegra, or Claritin.
