My scanner has been working improperly just recently. It scans the image but the resulting image is black. HP's online help does not seem to solve my problem.

Scanner: HP Scanjet 2300

1.) What could have cause it to be?
2.) Troubleshooting, anyone?

Did you recently download a new program? Before you do any of the following, I would recommend for you to uninstall everything that has to do with your scanner such as the software, drivers, etc. Head out to HP and download the most recent drivers and software. While your doing this, you should unplug the scanner from the wall and your computer. You need to install the software and drivers before you plug the scanner back to the computer and see if that works. Then do the following. LINK BELOW for additional info.

Good Luck

Section 3: The scans are black, blocky or only partial images
Verify the computer system meets the minimum system requirements as listed on the HP Scanjet scanner box. If you do not have the box for your HP Scanjet scanner, click here for system requirement listings (c00014015) .
Temporarily disable all software or programs that start automatically when the Windows operating system runs. Click here for instructions on disabling startup items (bps05697) .
Try scanning again. If the scanner still exhibits the hardware issue, complete the rest of the steps in this document. If the scanner hardware issue is resolved, re-enable the startup group items in small groups to determine which specific application is causing the issue. Click here for instructions on enabling the startup items (bps05697) .

How old is the scanner? Is the entire picture black or is it black and white? Try adjusting the settings such as image color and resolution. If none of these help, then maybe the image reader on the scanner is broken.

If it's recent, I'd suspect a broken wire or connection. If and only if you are handy with such things, open it up and take a look. Usually you can see mechanical damage. Be especially watchful around moving parts like that ribbon cable and its attachment points. Use a magnifying glass if necessary. With luck, it'll be something simple like a broken wire.
