i'm interested in fencing lately but i'm gonna be 20 real soon and have not been a very sporty person. can i still get a good grasp in it?

OK, maybe you're starting out a wee bit late, and you mgiht not make the next Olympic Trials... but, will that stop you from enjoying yourself? Will that stop you from getting some physical activity while having fun? Will that stop you from enjoying the camaraderie of the sport? Man, go for it! Go have fun. Enjoy yourself.

Actually from what I've heard most of the best fencers are middle aged, usually around their 40s.

Nope, I started wado-ryu karate when I was 33 years old (that's 3 years ago) and I started iaido and jo-do10 months ago.
So get on with it and good luck!

swords in hands grasp them tight you just might get a fighting strike.

Not a problem. I ahve seen, and even had a few students myself that were far older when they started.
