It was a Sony camera and batteries. Will the charger be able to charge a 4600mAh batteries also from Sony? Someone told me the charger would only have a maximum recharge capacity until 2500mAh.

Some chargers are programmed to stop charging after a time period has gone by. There are other chargers that sense when the battery is full and it will automatically switch to a trickle mode. Usually the chargers that come with cameras run on a timer because it's cheaper to distribute than adding circuitry to calculate when it's full. If you do buy one of those smart chargers, always check the labels. Some of them will say up to 2700 mAh. This is to prevent damage or fires. It knows how much power to put back into the battery, but it also knows it should take 30 minutes for 2700 mAh (for example purposes) batteries. Therefore it will stop charging after 30 minutes. But technically, you can unplug the charger and plug it back in and let the sensor do the rest.
