A dog on the street, with no tags or identification came up to my 15 week old puppy and started to trample all over it, biting it everywhere and almost tearing the poor thing apart from his uncut overgrown nails. The dog was pretty agressive and I did the most unusual thing in the world. I realized it must be lost, and as soon as I thought that he went on the road and was alomst killed by a truck that was passing by, luckily i was there to save him. Odd though it does seem the dog whose breed looks to me like a presa canario, looked pretty lost, so I brought him to my house it was pretty hard brining two dogs, i weighing like 150 pounds or so, about half a mile home walking, with one leash and constant barking and the dog trying to get at my puppy. What should i do about the dog? If i turn it over to the SPCA they might kill him in a couple of days if his owners don't use that as the first place to look, and my puppy was bleeding at the end when we came home? Can i press charges after

If any dog is not controlled, its basically setting its owner up for a law suit.
You can call the ASPCA and ask them 'if I catch this dog that attacked my puppy, can you tell me who the owner is, or if the owner picks it up so I can get my vet bills paid'.. See what they say.
If they say no they don't do that. Turn the dog into the Animal Control Officers and tell them it attacked your dog. At this point you need to rid the area of this danger to responsible people out walking with or without pets. You can't keep it with your puppy obviously.
Maybe you can look for a Presa Canario or AKC rescue home. If you really think it is somebody's beloved pet. Or you could run an add in the paper. If his nails are over grown it don't sound good. He may have been on the road a long time.
On the other hand he may have an ID chip on him. Maybe the ASPCA has a reader and can find its owners right away. Good Luck its a hard call on this.

Who are you going to sue? The dog has no tags! So how do you plan to sue the owner? Put up some posters if no one then call the SPCA and see if the put animals down if not then have them take the poor thing and put it up for adoption. Or find a nice family that will take the dog.

why press charges when the dog must of escaped it's not the owners fault and the dog was proberley confused as it was lost at the time i don't think it would seem fair and if you send it over the spca they wont put a healthy dog down but get your poor pup checked out but please don't try and sue the owners if the dog escaped it's not there fault if you see where i'm coming from if your nice to the owner of the dog they might just pay for your puppy's vet bills

Usually the SPCA will hold the dogs, if not for a certain number of days. However, if the dog is a threat they just might have to put it to sleep. If you do find the owners you can ask them to pay vet bills for your dog. If not then take it to animal services and file a complaint against the owners, or sue. My neighbor's dogs use to run into our yard and attack our dogs. The 2 two pitbulls killed my lab and injured my other two dogs. We reported them to animal services but they agreed to pay for the medical bills so no further action was needed. The second time it happend the animal shelter took the other dogs away.

You cant sue the owner of the dog because you don't know who the owner is. Since you took the dog in it is considered to be your responsibility now. So since you have no choice I would hand it over to the A.S.P.C.A because if you don't it could be a real threat to you, your dog and maybe even other people and thier dogs. You are correct about the A.S.P.C.A killing it but it is quick and painless, and it might just save a life! So think about.

P.S take your dog to the vet if you already haven't just to make sure that your dog is fine.

You are very kind to take in the dog that tore your dog apart. I don't know if I could have done that. If you can find who the owner is, then yes, you can sue for vet bills.

As far as what to do with the aggressive dog, you could put up fliers and take out an ad in the local paper and hopefully the owner will come and claim him. Until then, maybe you can keep him in the basement. If you aren't able to handle the aggressive dog, then I think the ASPCA is your only choice. They will usually exhaust all possibilities before deciding to euthanize.

But I would take your dog into the vet ASAP. Your dog could have internal injuries and other injuries that you aren't able to detect.

You can always contact a lawyer for free legal advice. It is illegal to walk a dog without a leash ( at least in new york ).
that happened to me when I was young & the dog bit my dog & myself. The owner was there & was able to get the dog away, But I needed stiches & the dog needed surgery. We did sue to cover all of the medical expenses for both of us & a little more. We won, the owner was fined & the dog was held to check for agression. good luck

You can't sue the owner since you don't know who the owner is.Now you are responsible for the dog. Even if he bites someone else or another dog that is not yours, you are responsible. And if he stays you need to get him a tag. You should of contacted animal control instead of bringing him home that is if you didn't want him.

Sounds like you do have concern for this dog, unfortunelty owners will just moved and leave without taking their pet with them and leave them to fend for themselves. You might try calling a local Pet and Rescue to see if they can help find him a home. I commend you for trying to help this guy out under the circumstances you had to deal with. The Animal Shelters will put him down. I am sorry your little guy got hurt. Good Luck

Ok, well seems to me that he was playing with your puppy and his untrimmed nails cut your puppy. Right? seems like everyone decided that he agressively attacked your puppy. You should be careful with exposing your puppt to an adult dog that is not being cared for properly there are many illnesses that your family and your puppy can get from exposure to such an animal. Animal contol is your best option here.
