I think he might actually have a point. I mean, certainly Jesus wasn't a supporter of capitalism...

Does it matter? Chavez is a big-mouthed ignorant. Sometimes he gets carried away and says irrelevant things like this.

In the bible, Jesus was quite the activist for the poor and encouraged the rich to donate their excessive cash to the poor because it's the nice thing to do. Considering Jesus founded what is now the world's biggest religion, Hugo Chavez is probably right. Jesus might be the "greatest socialist of all time." Of course Chavez himself is a pretty horrible socialist in comparison.

The bible is very clear that greed is not a good thing, and any good capitalist is greedy.
So yeah there is an obvious connection. A true Christian is supposed to live for charity to others basically, something not compatible with a system that is all about serving the self.

I do find it ironic that so many American Christians basically ignore all of the wealth aspects of the bible, since it's basically not compatible with our rich lifestyle.
I mean, it's pretty clear that you should give away that high definition TV and help your neighbor out, if you want to serve the lord and see him in heaven.
But noooo, we just keep praying to Jesus for that new ipod instead.

Since the Jesus myth is an ongoing creation of it's believers, "Jesus" can be anything they want him to be:

White, Black, Republican, Socialist, Whatever....

It might interest you to know that the first organized sect to emerge based around the worship of Jesus, the Marcionites, did not believe that "Jesus" had ever physically existed. When all the Christian sects were united at the Council of Nicaea, the Marcionite version of Jesus was incorporated into the new mythos as the "Holy Spirit".

I'd say that's a very valid point.
Absolute equality is the ultimate goal of socialism, although it seems unlikely to work in human society.
Mind you, by saying such we are attempting to fit Jesus into modern political contexts, a dangerous thing to do, as no era can be truly objectively compared to another.

The U.S. has been in an unofficial civil war since the 2000 election. Right Wing fanaticism or Left Wing Socialism. They both obviously can't co exist peacefully, so at what point does the pushing become an all out fist fight?

I think we can take the phrase "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" to be anti-capitalism at least

or this "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

Jesus never advocated socialism. In fact, just the opposite. Jesus advocated a social system devoted to voluntary charity, a principle that is only applicable to a capitalist economic model.

Socialism requires the mandatory redistribution of wealth. According to Jesus, that is stealing. Socialism also requires that those who are capable of producing actually produce. That is involuntary servitude, another anti-Christian concept. If you look at the legal requirements necessary to preserve a socialist economic model, every one of them stands in stark opposition to Christianity.

Is it any coincidence that every socialist government ever established began its reign with a wide-spread repression of Christianity?

He sure came across as a God fearing Christian when he was making the sign of the cross and calling Bush the Devil don't you think?
