Fire was never really common, since making fire was "discovered" it's been revered as something ultimately sacred. Rudolph Otto's idea of the holy = "any time one encounters both fear and awe." Fire gives warmth and light in addition to allowing one to cook. Awe. But fire can also burn and even kill; it can destroy a home. Fear. Flame has been used in religious rituals ever since people had both religion and the knowledge of how to light a fire.

Other than that, yes, they were fair questions. However, I disagree with the third answer. "Kindness" or "Love" would be more appropriate, as I don't recall as many curses in Eastern, Western, South Asian or Tribal religions as I do teachings of love and kindness.
