Sometimes a stupid question makes a lot of sense when you analyse it, or the person asking it actually has a point based on his life experiences. If I think he is not fooling, I will answer him tactfully.

I work as a guide in a history theme park, and we get loads of kids there on school trips... they'll sometimes ask questions that should really be pretty obvious. If that's the case I'll often ask them 'Well, what do you think?', try to make them work it out for themselves. That will help them remember the answer better than when I'll just tell them everything. I try not to be derogitory unless it's older kids who're clearly just asking stupid questions on purpose, like 'did they have Star Trek on tv' or something, yeah, 5000 years ago, hahahah, then I'll sometimes give them a stupid answer in return :)

Depends on the person asking the question and my mood. If s/he is genuinely ignorant/stupid, I will be nice. This happens when I had to live with a stone age tribe in Papua. There are lot of questions they posed seem to be silly. It's just that they simply don't know.

But if the person is a snob son of a *****, my tongue can be very sharp and fast to be derogatory especially when I am not in a good mood.

But try to be nice and polite as there is no reasons to be rude. It's always nice to see a person who is genuinely down to earth and has well manner.

I'd probably intuitively give a shocked look, but politely answer the question with a smile if I knew the answer. I know I've asked stupid questions before but sometimes you just can't remember the answer!

I have a boss that says there are no stupid questions. Always be nice and if you don't have a sensible answer for the question just say so

Nice. Stupid is ok. It's the mean, offensive questions that I ignore.

"Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you become like him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he seem wise in his own eyes."
That's from Proverbs in the Bible and I think it points out the paradoxical nature of answering any stupid question. Perhaps the best solution is to avoid answering them, maybe on the basis you need time to think...

It really does depend upon the person. If I liked them I'd be nice. If I didn't like them, I'd ignore them or be sarcastic with my answer.

I'm trying to learn to ignore them, because I'm not always happy when I leave an answer that's too preachy when I'm a hipocrite sometimes myself, lol.
