Does anyone know of a discussion group I can join? I have custody of my grandson. I'm only 43 and I need some advice from others in similar situations. Please, this is a serious matter, if you can't help, don't hurt by being mean, mouthy or immature. Thanks.

Grands City and custodial_grandparents are two groups that you can find right here on Yahoo.
I went to Yahoo Groups, typed in 'GRANDPARENTS WITH CUSTODY', and several listings popped up.

Wow, I'm not sure wether to congratulate you or say "I'm so sorry" honey. Just when you think you've raised your babies, you are doing it again. Only this time it's alot harder. Kids today aren't what they use to be and I can understand your need for a support group. Lucky for you, this situation is way more common than you think. In this day and age, more grandparents are raising the babies than the parents themselves. If I were you, I'd first contact this child's school (if he's in school) and ask the guidance counselors if there are any other grandparents raising their grandchildren. And if so, you could start by maybe introducing yourself to some of them. Or in other words, form your own support group. I know you were looking for specific answers, but truth be told, I work in Social Services and there just aren't any out there that I am aware of. We have a ton of programs for the financial support of these children, but we are severely lacking in any type of emotional support that goes along with caring for them. I think society deems that if you were good enough to raise your own children, you are good enough to raise your grandchildren without any help. It's a tough road grandma and I'm sorry to see that you are going it alone. Keep your chin up, start reaching out to others, maybe talk to the social services staff in your area about starting a support group. I know for a fact there are many other people in the same situation you are in with nowhere to turn.

I dont know what kind of disscusion group you want but you can always go to your local church and they can usually tell you were you can find what your looking for.
