Depending on the area, like higher crime areas, etc... many schools added metal detectors and some even have security guards on duty full-time now.

There have not been any actual laws created yet on the federal level; although, many were considered. The decision was to leave it up to the states then the states sort of passed it on to each county school district.

Weapons have never been allowed on state properties btw. There was one new law that was widely accepted, schools now have the authority to search student vehicles and book bags that are on school property. They always had the authority to search school lockers but searching personal property before Columbine was prohibited.

Note: While several states, including Colorado, passed stricter gun control laws in the aftermath of Columbine, gun control continues to be contentiously debated in the nation's legislatures.

Colorado cracked down on the sale of weapons at gun shows since that is where Dylan Kleebold and Eric Harris got the 9mm carbine they used. Other than that Colorado allready had fairly stiff penalties for weapons and even Columbine allready had metal detectors, Harris and Kleebold came to school long after classes had started and the guards had stopped searching. Most of the explosives, etc had been placed in the school the night before during a school dance. Before then there were not even that many fights at Columbine. There are schools in Denver that have kids expelled for bringing weapons to school all of the time, but nothing of the sort at Columbine.

Laws have no basis on school safety when it comes to armed criminals. A sign saying that it is a "drug-free gun-free" school isn't going to stop either from coming onto the school grounds. Having metal detectors isn't going to prevent an armed criminal from coming onto school grounds either. Making new laws does not "prevent" criminals from doing something, it just makes it more punishable.

I always find it interesting how some people believe that a law against guns in schools is going to magically prevent a criminal with a gun from entering. I doubt that the little piece of paper or a sign saying "no guns allowed" is going to physically prevent a person with a gun coming onto school grounds. Criminals are criminals because they don't follow laws, how would making for laws that they're not going to follow keep a school safe, exactly?

It varies by state.

Many states enacted laws prohibiting guns on schools, or imposing other security measures. Many school districts imposed other specific measures.

It varies.
