Is a 50 Calibre the most powerful sniper rifle? I have heard of a possibly made up anti-armour weapon made by barretta or something similar, that fires an armour peircing round that can go through 5 inches of steel. It needs a support, but can go through a tank, those inside and come out the other side. Is this true or is the 50 calibre the most powerful sniper rifle?

The Barrett company manufactures some of the larger caliber rifles such as M82A1/M107, M95, and M99 all of which are .50 cal, and are currently developing the XM109 which is a 25mm sniper rifle that is lethal out to 2000 meters and can penetrate 50mm (about 2 inches) of armor plating. How can you not love that? But if it is something that is going through 5 inches of steel it is most likely a recoilless rifle, some of which can penetrate between 400-500 mm of armor (about 16-20 inches) and come in a variety of calibers but have been mostly replaced by wire guided missles like the TOW (Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided missile).

The 50 BMG rifles (not the M2 machineguns) are generally the most powerful sniper rifles available. There are 20mm rifles available, but are not common. Barrett was the first company to mass produce semi-auto and bolt-action 50 BMG rifles. Their first product was the M82 semi-auto. It is not so accurate in my opinion. Every time I competed in a 50 BMG match, the M82’s came in last.

The standard armor piercing bullet from the 50 BMG will penetrate an inch of mild steel at 200 yards. I have tried shooting one inch hardened steel at 150 yards, but the AP bullet just makes a shallow crater and bounces off. There is no way the 50 BMG will penetrate 5 inches of steel

marksatguy has his head up his butt. These rifles were made for target shooting for civilians. They were later adapted for military use.

Yeah, it was defintely the best sniper rifle when it was invented by Barret. It's .50 cal is capable of immense damage when used with armor-piercing bullets; and can reach over a mile with specialized aero-dynamic bullets. However, the military is introducing many new snipers that are surpassing the once legendary Barret..
idk man, i still think the Barret is the best, i've read stories of it shooting down a helicopter..soo i would have to answer your question as:

Yes, the Barret .50 cal is the most deadly sniper rifle.

The .50 caliber rifle is powerful but won't go through a tank. It uses the .50 MG round. It's big! 1500 yard kills with it aren't too unusual.

No.

There's a rifle manufactured by Steyr that fires a larger tungsten 'dart'. Not sure if it is in service anywhere.

Can't remember what it is called, but it was in a Jane's book.
