Assuming they aren't killed by a predator or human, then the average age of a backyard chicken is between 5 and 8 years. However, there have been cases where they have lived for up to 15 or even 20 years.

We keep chickens and the oldest one we have is around 5 years old. She doesn't lay eggs anymore but she is the boss of the chicken house! On average our other chickens have lived up to 3 years but I know they can live longer.

And to think that I always thought that a chicken was a juvenile hen or rooster. A chicken is only a chicken until it matures. If it matures and goes on to be a hen or a rooster then it will last for anywhere between 15 and 20 years on average.

Pure breeds and first crosses tend to live longer than commercial hybrids such as hylines and ISA browns which tend to wear themselves out with constant laying. A lot will depend on their diet and living conditions too. If you're not worried about egg production, a hen could have a useful lifespan (as a pet) of 8 or 9 years.
