In adults, it results in chronic disease in only 10%. That means 90% of the time, it subsides spontaneously after an acute illness. In infection transmitted from a mother to her baby, it is chronic in 90% cases. The younger the patient, the more is the chance of a chronic infection. An acute infection is also rarely fatal, due to acute liver failure. If the infection does not subside in 6 months, it is chronic. Chronic infection is treated with interferon and lamivudine for about 6 months.

It is occasionally fatal, but usually is not. There is no specific treatment for acute hepatitis B. Antiviral medications help control chronic disease.
