We weren't supposed to mess with other people's little space that surronded them and all their belongings. So anyway, what happens when someone missed that lecture and stands nose-to-nose with you the entire conversation? One of my teachers does that and it drives me nuts. Can I just keep backing up and not seem rude? Do I tell him to back out of my bubble?

He's a really nice guy and isn't a perv.

I have not heard of the "bubble" but I know what you mean. I might say, " I'm sorry, but you seem very close to me, I feel comfortable with more personal space." And then I'd back away - he'd be a fool to get close again.

Honestly, it depends. Is he originally from America? Because if not he could be from a country where the "bubble" is much smaller. American concepts of personal space are not at all universal.

If he's American, he needs to back off. I'm assuming from your name/avatar that you're female. Since he's your teacher, I'd consider the closeness improper. If you back up, and he follows, tell him politely that you are uncomfortable with people in your personal space. If it still continues, I'd go to someone in charge and tell them he's making you uncomfortable.

Good luck.

When my son was in umm 11th grade or so, being the wise mouth that he was at the time...
a teacher telling him to wake up or something...he says to teacher, "stay out of my bubble space"

of course he got suspended for that...

hes grown up and gone now but we do have a laugh remembering that and here all this time, i thought it was an orignal, "get out of my bubble space" lmao and you're telling me it was taught in grade school..

I'll have to ask him the next time I talk to him

Usually I try to take a step back, but I have a few people at work who tend to get closer and closer and try to reach for my arm like they need to touch me,, to feel likes I'm listening.. Lol Well I usually end up telling them that they are making me slightly uncomfortable and that they had entered my personal space, most just laugh it off and back away.
Lol definetly to close when you are sucking up my air

well i tend to tell people that my bubble ends where my range of physical attack ends.

stay an arm's length back ok.....

if someone has to be 2 inches from you it is not rude to ask them to take a step back. just tell them that you are clostrophobic and that people being that close makes you uncomfortable.

different cultures have different concepts of personal space. You can see this when Arab talks to American...looks like the Arab is chasing the American around the room.

Just say to him/her, "Professor XYZ, it makes me uncomfortable when you stand so close, would you please give me a little room"?

say it with a smile and should be ok...

When talking to him, don't specifically mention the term bubble.Instead, tell him Mr.______, I do not feel comfortable with you this close to me, how about we speak with more of a distance between us?
