they make excellent house dogs! they are really easy to train and are great with families. These dogs are the most common for seeing eye dogs or any foundation that train dogs to help disabled people because they are so smart. They are very sweet and mellow(after they're not puppies). My uncle raises them to become seeing eye dogs and he is on his 9th dog right now. potty training is very simple and shouldn't take over 2 weeks. if you know how to train them correctly they are excellent dogs. They shed a lot though!! and i mean a lot!!! so be prepared for that. i wish i could have one so bad but it wouldnt go in my house

I always heard that they did but I have a 9 week old golden now and he is terrible! He bites me, my little sister, and my brother. My little brother is only 1 yaer old and when he's crawling on the floor Shadow (my golden), goes and starts biting him in the head. I took him to the vet and they said that he would grow up to be a wonderful family pet, but he will be very mischevious until about two years of age. My vet actually doesn't recommend goldens for people with young children because they play too rough. They also needs LOTS of exercise. If I don't take him jogging he acts a million times worse and tears up everything. He also steals things out of my room and runs. By the time I catch him it's destroyed. Goldens are better outside dogs. My breeder said that her dogs like it better outside than they do in the house. A good house dog would be a cocker spaniel. I had one before and she was wonderful. No biting! Check out the link below. It tells you what to expect (it is very accurate because it is exactly what I've experienced).

I think so. I've never had the pleasure to own one myself, but I've known lots of people who have. They're good, sweet dogs. I'm going to be getting a dog in the next year and have considered a golden retriever.

I believe a Golden would make a Wonderful House Dog.
Retriever Breeds are Smart, Gentle, & have a Wonderful Attention span for Training. They are also known for loving Children & Everyone else around.
But, like every dog they do require Repetetive Training and praise. One of the first things my dogs start out with in the Training sense is to Play with their food while they are eating it. Touch them, move their bowl around, Play with their food, etc...No one wants a Food Aggresive dog, and ecspecially not a large sized dog. :)
Good Luck with your Deciosion! Goldens are Definately Gorgeous!

I have a 2 year old golden retriever named Jake that is simply the best dog I've ever had. They do need training though. I took Jake to Petsmart and put him through puppy kindergarten, and we've had obedience training because goldens can be master maniupulators. He housetrained very easily and is absolutely adorable. Even my sister, who dislikes dogs and didn't want anything to do with Jake when she came to live with me, has fallen in love with him.

Be aware that they need a yard to play in, tons of toys, and they love to chew. They will always want to be with you because you are the dog's pack and they are very family oriented. I have never heard or seen Jake growl or snap at anyone, but it doesn't mean it can't happen.

Invest a lot of time, love, training and make sure your dog gets regular vet visits and decent food, and in return you will have the absolute devotion and attention of a truly great animal.!

(*laughter*) They are wonderful dogs. I have one now, and had one previously.

There are two things you need to realize:
1. They need exercise. Otherwise, you can end up with a chubby Golden, and that's rough on their hips.
2. Remove all breakable objects at tail height. That tail is deadly, and can send the most precious objects flying through the air. It's not intentional, it's just that they're soooo happy.

They make great house dogs as long as they have a yard to play in and/or get walked alot and have a place to run safely. I have two and they live with us in the house, but we have a big fenced yard and also land that we take them on hikes and runs. They love to cuddle and mine sleep with me and sit on the couch with me.
