Charlie is almost 3 years old. We got him when he was 10 months old from the pound....He's a Chow/Irish Setter Mix....and for the most part during the nice weather he is an outside dog....but not during the Winter. We try and let him roam around the house with us and be with us as much as possible...but he just wont sit still...he paces the room and barks constantly. Nothing has worked so far to make him settle down. Any ideas?

i would walk him daily....and get him one these thing or something like it....it will give him something to do.... and feed him to as this one has a size ajustment on it. i love it it helped my dog with sepreration problems.

also we use a 'go lay down' command when the dogs are well...annoying everyone they like to take 2 steps to ur 1....it gets very annoying.

You have to be careful how much you give the dog, but I used to feed my overactive spitz one 12 oz can of regular beer lol every once in a while, and after that she would lay down and be all hmmmm for a while. First time took a little practice and patience, but shortly after all I had to do was go half through the motions and there was dog ready to drink. Just try it one time can't hurt, but remember one 12 oz beer is to a 20 pound dog what a whole 6 or 12 pack is to you or me, so maybe start with a 1/2 can or so, take it easy with that stuff dont want an alkie dog lol.

Question - "How do we get him to stop barking and hold still?"...lol, sounds like a personal problem to me. Sorry, I am a man of humor...anyway, our dog is now almost 10, and she is the same way sometimes. Of course, she will go through times of extreme excitement when such pacing, panting, and random barking at the walls can be fairly annoying, but you must understand that dogs probably want to imitate what they see everyday - and that would be people...people moving, people walking, and, most importantly, people TALKING. I can't imagine life without language, but that is the reality of the dog who seeks to communicate through a "language" which we deem "abjectly annoying". Remember, too, that a dog is an animal meant to be outside and roaming, not necessarily always within your vicinity. I know my answer hasn't served to help much answer your original question, but, if no one else can, then maybe I have helped you to understand why there is no real answer to the nature of such a loving beast?

Well, one of my dobes is an inside dog and the other is an outside dog. When my outside dog is inside, she does the same thing as your dog. When she gets on my nerves, i have a mat and cushion that she has to go and lie on and then she gets a reward for sitting on it and being quiet. A kong toy with peanut butter in it is good, or a rawhide bone or pigs ear. I always make her wait at least 10 minutes bfore i give her the treat tho. I also make her lie on the mat when the doorbell rings or she will annoy the crap out of visitors.

P.S. dont punish him for the annoying behaviour but reward him when he does the right thing.

Once your pup has obeyed your command, in a soothing voice, appreciate his action and express your care by rubbing his chest or patting him. You wouldn’t want him to be excited and playful while you are teaching something, so avoid any quick movements of the hand, especially over his head and neck along with a shrill voice. The emphasis is to learn what your dog recognizes as a reward after being obedient.

You have to take him out everyday, even in the winter; I have a dog and he's energetic no matter what time of the year and he loves the winter too. Maybe your dog will enjoy too! Guaranteed, he'll be a lot calmer if you take him out everyday for a walk!
If our dog even misses one day, he'll act just like yours.
