Sometimes, they have servers who are really nice, apart from preparing your sub for you the way you want it. Its pretty much more than what they would do in a coffee shop and in a coffee shop you're expected to tip anyway. I think they must have a tip cup if someone does feel the service has been good. Plus, Subway is pretty expensive anyway, and two six inchers will set you back by $10 anyway, so its no big deal to spend another 50 cents on tips is there?

Subway used to allow tip jars at their service counters. Back in the day (talking about 10 years and more ago)

Since then tax regulators have started bearing down on unreported income, and yes, believe it ot not, tips are considered income. If you do not report your tips as income then yes you can be audited some point later in time.

Places like Subway and Blimpies and Quiznos have specifc rules against tip jars these days. There is reason behind it. Some of it relies on tax laws, since these services are not covered under delivery or waitress like payroll......another part of it is the tip jar itself is not conducive to a pleasant atmosphere for the customer. That part is marketing.

Waiters (meaning people who actually carry your order to your table) are paid below minimum wage because it's expected they'll be tipped. Plus, the IRS assumes they're tipped at least 8%, whether they really are or not. None of this is true of fast food workers.

So, if you think Subway workers deserve more, you should write your congressman and demand a higher minimum wage.

It might be against company policy. It would be nice if they were allowed to accept tips. Some of the workers at the Subway where I live are nasty and never smile. If they made tips I'm sure they would be nicer.

Since most people don't like feeling that they have to tip, many companies have a "no tipping" policy. Instead, they pay their employees. It is nice that you want to reward someone for good service but I feel that a certain level of service is expected and I should not have to pay extra for it.

OK, they get paid to do that work. Servers don't get minimum wage. They depend on your tips. Coffee shops and the like hire them, for usually over minimum wage, like fast food. We don't need to tip them. Plus that money is not reported for tax purposes. Some people say when you tip people that don't depend on tips you are taking away from people who do depend on tips. I don't know but I never tip them. I do however tip on carryouts at sit down restaurants where a bartender, server or hostess takes my order.

If you want to tip them then just go ahead. You don't need a tip cup.
