Some people you can't really do anything about. I think the best thing you can do is to be pleasant but careful with her. Don't let her friendly demeanor coax you into saying something to her that she may spread around behind your back. I do NOT think you should be nasty with her, however. That will simply give her more ammunition when she is talking to others.
Also, don't talk bad about her behind her back. If you do, people will assume it's just some kind of personal battle between you. If you are honest and speak kindly of her, but they hear her being nasty about you, they will most likely figure out that it's her, not you, who are at fault. People aren't dumb: they figure out the truth, given good evidence.

Just stop letting her drag you into her games. Be cordial to her but let it end right there. If you keep letting her play with you she will continue to think less of you. Let this be yet another reminder why you should not have romantic relationships with co-workers.

DRIVE HER INSANE!
Since she's talking about you, she must talk about other people, so keep your ears open..
Create a new e-mail account with her name on yahoo or something and send it to her work e-mail address all day with random messages. You could include links about being too negative, gossiping at work, and whatever gossip you've heard her say about someone else, put it in the e-mail so she'll think someone knows that she's gossiping; this may straighten out the problem a bit!
If not, it will drive her crazy having e-mails coming in to her from herself! Use the computers at your local library.

Take the high road, and ignore it, unless it is affecting your job.
If it is affecting your job, contact a lawyer, and ask what steps you can take.

Don't talk to her about personal things. It sounds like she would use any info you gave her against you. I would only stick to topics that have to do with your job.

BACKSTABBING IS THE NATURE OF INSECURE PEOPLE. IF YOU CAN QUOTE HER ON SOME OF THE MEAN THINGS SHE'S SAYING ABOUT YOU, MAYBE SHE'LL GET A LITTLE PARANOID, HERSELF, AND BE MORE CAREFUL ABOUT THE MEAN THINGS SHE SAYS ABOUT YOU AND TO WHO SHE SAYS THEM TO.

Let it go. Don't sweat it. It is her problem and not yours. If she is doing this to you on purpose, ignore her!
