Here's a link to Wilton. They have a kit you could use or you can bake 3-4 cakes and cut and shape them into the shape you desire. Buying the kit may be easier, you just mix the cake and pour into the pan.

two ways of doing this type of cake, one is to bake the cake in an angel food cake tube pan, then shape it into a bell of the ball type of dress, ice and put a barbie inside the hole of the cake, ice around her, and you have a wonderful cake. The other way is to bake the cake in a round stainless steel mixing bowl, make sure it is tall enough for barbie though. When done, no shaping is required, but you just push Barbie into the middle of the cake, ice and decorate to your hearts content. I hope these two ideas helped, Take care, and have fun.

my aunt did it for us for years

Make a cake in a well-greased 2 quart round glass baking dish (the 2 Quart Classic Batter Bowl from The Pampered Chef is perfect for this)
Your cake can be any flavor; just pick a flavor that will give you a color you would like for the "skirt" of the cake.
Let the cake cool (very important!) and remove from bowl. Then, take a Barbie Doll (nude) and insert it in the middle of the cake up to her waist. You may make a hole to insert the doll, or simply stick her in firmly if you are in a rush.
Now, you make Barbie's dress with frosting! The cake forms the skirt of the dress. Use frosting to decorate the skirt (pre-made or home-made frosting; your choice)..
Take the frosting up onto Barbie's torso to make the bodice of the dress! You can make any design with the frosting; sleeveless, dress with straps, etc.
Frosting dress can be simple, or very elaborate with frosting rosettes for a formal dress
Chill cake and serve.

well, I don't know but I have a few ideas. Cut out a pieace of paper to the size of the cake pan, then draw a outline of a dress shape, then find some sort of oven safe flexible cookie cutter, (you might have to invent one), then line up the enlarged cookie cutter/cake shaper to the outline of the drawn dress, then put that in the cake pan, make the mix, pour the mix in the cake shaper, and bake!!! Hot Blamy Bam!!!

the plastic thing? go buy a happy meal or something then stick it on. but to make the cake into that shape get a big pic of barbie's face. put it on top of the cake and cut it out then put the icing and stuff
