The vet said it wasn't ringworm, but it is round patches, they both have them. The vet has given antibiotics and prednisone. One is on an allergy diet. I bathe them with a shampoo that contains triclosan, sulfur, and salicylic acid. It's just getting worse. Should I add tea tree to the shampoo? Can I try tinactin?

I haven't caught it, neither has the cat. Dr. also said it wasn't mange, but he hasn't said what it is either.

Jess, yes, I am looking for home remedies, since my multiple visits to the vet haven't stopped the problem. Where do you think I got the antibiotics and prednisone? But I don't recall him actually testing, just eyeballing and treating.

I am asking about Tinactin because I think it looks like ringworm, even though the vet said it wasn't, and because the other treatments were not stopping the spread.

find another vet, one that is a dermatologist. ringworm is a fungus, and is sometimes accompanied by other things like yest, staph. sometimes vets miss these things believe it or not.
don't add anything to your treatment until you know exactly what it is. what did the vet say it was?????
did you have allergy tesing done? it's very expensive to have it done. that's why i ask. what are the findings if so? you have a lot more questions to ask your vet. and the main one is, What Is This? and why isn't it geting better?

You can try an iodine solution... It works on people but i'm not sure about dogs. But if the vet said it wasn't ringworm you should probably take them back in to be checked to see what it is if they're catching it from eachother. Have you caught it? If you're handling them be sure to wash your hands very well afterwards!

Mange can look like ringworm as well. Did your vet test your dogs for mange?

How about bloodwork to rule out things such as thyroid problems? Its unlikely but possible you could have two with thyroid problems which can also cause hair loss.

No offense but it kinda sounds like you are looking for a home remedy and havent actually taken the dog to the vet. If your vet said it wasn't ringworm, why would you be asking about tinactin? What are you expecting that to do? That there tells me you haven't spoken to your vet. Tinactin is for fungal infections, such as ringworm.

You really need to have bloodwork done on these guys since your vet has ruled out ringworm and mange. How did they test for these things when you were there?

You can try bathing your dog in an Iodine shampoo called Furrst Aid (sp?). Ask your vet if they carry it. We have used the sulfur meds and it did not seem to do much good. We did find that our dog had a allergy to the food we were feeding him and was causing hair loss and hot spots. It had too many fillers ( corn etc). we switched to a good quality dog food( meat being the first ingredients) and his skin cleared up.

Try wiping the patches with a mix of 3 parts olive oil, 1 part vit e oil, 1 part tea tree oil, 1 part lavendar oil. Mix all the oils together in a small bottle, shake well, apply with a clean cotton pad daily. If the areas are very large or numerous mix it up in a spray bottle.

Switch the food to Diamond dog food (http://www.diamondpet.com/), we had great success with it for our Doxie who had skin problems. Add a little kelp & brewer's yeast to the food daily (Upco.com has great prices)

miconazole (Tinactin) or clotrimazole (Lotrimin) are anti fungals that you could try and if it works that would be great. They are topical ointments that are anti fungal. If the dog acts like it is burning than it isn't ringworm

You can try the tea tree, but I am not sure if it will work. I would try the tinactin though. It will kill almost any topical fungal infection.
