My boyfriend is taking a police exam in June. How should he be preparing physically, and should he be studying? He really wants to be prepared, and I want to help him as best as I can.

Each state or department has it's own requirements on physical agility tests however what is expected of him should be listed on the recruitment information form or application. Averagely he will be expected to do as many sit ups and push ups as he can in a minute and there is a minimum that he must do and a mile or 1.5 mile run all within specific time frames.
As far as studying is concerned there are different books on the market he can purchase that can help prepare him for the exam. One that comes to mind is Barron's (how to prepare for a police exam) that he can purchase at Barnes and Noble or any other book store. There are tests in the book similar to the one that he will be taking that will prepare him for the written exam. If he does well on the written he will have to take an oral exam.
Sitting before an oral board can be quite intimidating so make sure that he is neatly dressed and clean cut. He will have to tell them about himself and most certainly they will ask him why he wants to be a police officer. You can help him prepare for the oral board by reading him questions from the book and seeing how he answers. Have other friends and relatives do the same. The more he does this type of thing the more comfortable he will become.
Some of the questions the oral board will ask will be related to general police knowledge (since he's not a cop yet he's not expected to know this stuff in great detail) but he will also be asked integrity questions like; 'what would you do if you saw a brother officer steal something' or 'what would you do if you stopped a car some night and discovered it was the mayor driving and he was highly intoxicated. These may lead into questions on discrestion such as 'because the mayor is your boss would you drive him home instead of arresting him?'
I hope this helps you.
Good luck.

Some agencies have their own study guide or a study guide that they recommend candidates use. Applicants should find out if the agency they will be testing for has or recommends a study guide. If they do, candidates should make sure to use it. You can buy study guides in bookstores and online. Most of the study guides or police test preparation books are pretty good. Applicants should use as many as they can. They should make sure to understand why a correct answer is correct. They should also practice their basic reading comprehension skills, basic grammar skills, spelling skills, and basic math skills. They should practice to improve their observation and memory skills. They should make sure to get a good night's sleep the night before any tests, and to eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the tests. They should dress appropriately, and not be late. How well you do on written tests and during interviews can be very important when trying to get police officer jobs.

I have helped several police officers with exams.

1/ study in bites of no more that 30 mins, any study after that is a waste of time. Take a 5 min break and just look at how well you are doing.

2/ relax - do lots to relax - after 2 -3 hours study take a long break and take a walk.

3/ use Buzan methods of speed reading and mind mapping.

4/ get tested for your multiple intelligence and learning styles and use the correct techniques for you.

5/ make a picture of what you are studying for. dream it - live it - love it

6/ do not cram

He should study all the criminal codes in your state and study the basic criminal law structure. Physically, he should lift weights a few times a week and jog if at all possible. Some states require physical agility testing.
