I'd say yes. However, it's not for everyone. There's an article one guy wrote about his Ubuntu experience that might help you decide. It's at http://consumer.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTI5OCwxLCxoY29uc3VtZXI= and has screenshots as well as lots of information on what's involved in installing and running Ubuntu.

I've looked at it and this is my opinion on the subject of migrating to linux. Ubuntu is a great alternative for users who want to migrate with ease and usability. However, this distro is fairly automated restricting alot of ease of customization as far as compiling and packaging goes. The system automates so many things that it doesn't help beginners really learn much about how to use their systems. On the forums people post answers, not solutions. Its a great system with good hardware detection, but the proprietary software packages isn't that great and it becomes a semi-bloated system after fresh install. Yes, it can run decent on a low-end machine, but for smooth use it takes a more mid level machine. For very new migraters it's a good choice still I believe. After using it and going through the forums you learn basically how to use the terminal. But I don't like alot of the support just say solutions like: "...just type sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install somelib..."

I think they should be helping people learn what they're doing and how to do it rather than feeding them the info.
