i have used garlic on all my dogs...we have never had a flea problem country here to..lotts woods walks...i get the human tablet from the health store(plain garlic nothing else in it) it has a weight chart and go by it for the weight of ur dog...or u can do a clove..or powder....to much salt is not good for dogs. i find the tablets easier i just crush them on their food. ( they get table scraps and water on their food so it just adds some more flavor....also u could get brewers yeast for dog that has garlic in it...my dogs love theses to...pet stores or online places like http://www.petedge.com/ carry it.

if you're looking for a holistic remedy, i don't know of one.
i do know that fles are very hard to get rid of because there isn't any ONE product that you can use to kill fleas in all stages of their life. eggs larvae adult.......
i reccommend frontline applications once a month. but you need to clean BIG TIME and spray for the eggs and adults that are in your home and in their bedding.
sinse you live in the country frontline does help end the cycle. It's a great start.
It works by getting in to the sebacious glands and then is distibutedthrough the body via the oil glands. then when a flea bites your dog, the flea is poisoned and then dies. but you still have the eggs and the other fleas out there waiting to get on your dog. that's why you have to clean and spray so much

Advantage is a great flea treatment (I know you asked about home remedies, hold on...). Some vets will sell it by the dose which could run 10-15.00, depending on the size of the dog.

Aside from that, adding garlic (the cloves, not the powder) to his food will deter fleas. Just a bit, like a part of a section, not the whole bulb. And, added benefits, it is a natural anti-biotic, good for cholestorol and animals love it.

I don't think my answer is going to help you much, because of the price... but Revolution is AWESOME. It works perfectly. I have not seen a flea in years and years. It runs around $10-15 a dose, and they USUALLY sell it in doses of 7 (with one of them being free). That IS expensive... BUT...

You MIGHT be able to get it a dose at a time. Ask your vet! Think about it... $10-15 a month, and NO fleas.

AND...

It also cures heartworm, ear mites, hookworm, roundworm, and ticks! You think $60-90 is too much for flea protection? Well, it's a LOT cheaper than taking your dog in for heartworm or ticks, both of which could possibly kill your dog.

But if you don't have the money, you don't have the money. I apologize if I just waved a carrot in front of your nose that you can't have. This is what we use for our pets, and it works so well, I just had to throw the idea out there. Good luck!

p.s. Oh, I forgot to say that one dose supposedly lasts a month... but we actually only use it about once every month and a half, and it has worked fine.

Yes,I have a very safe remedy, and it has worked for years on our farms, this was passed down and is simple and very inexpensive.take some garlic salt (not powder)sprinkle on dogs dry food or sprinkle in with moist, the more you put in the better it is.even though a dog sweats through its paws they will also perspire a bit through their skin.the garlic turns their coats quite glossy and is very good for their systems.we raise St Bernard's and this works great all year round.

Most everyone recommended one of two natural flea repellants - garlic. The other is baker's yeast. Check your vet for the correct dosage of both garlic and yeast.

Lemongrass soap. There is something in the oil of the plant "lemongrass" that all bugs hate... Fleas included. It works for people and mosquitos, too.
