I have a four year old birthday coming up and some of the children are allergic to dairy and one is allergic to bananas. I have no idea what to do about the birthday cake. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

My guess would be to check with the parents and see if soy milk or rice milk would be ok to use as a substitute. A friend of mine is a vegan and I know she bakes with soy milk and says it's good. The banana is easy not to use, but I can't imagine not having a cake for a birthday party.

Then I'd suggest making a chocolate cake, lot's of chocolate should cover the taste just fine!!! And for a frosting you can make a glaze or do the same substitution. Bet if you ask the Mom's of any of the kids with the dairy allergies and they would have a known good recipe. Or maybe someone here will have first hand experience...but for a substitution like this I personally would prefer to make one that someone has tasted.

Bet it will be easy and fine though. Sounds like a simple swap to me. Good luck with the 4 year olds! That sounds like more of a challenge lol

If you are intending to bake the cake yourself and have a recipe, try to go through and see what ingredients are dairy and then substitute. For example if it calls for butter, substitute pure olive or canola oil margarine or oil. If the recipe asks for milk to be added you can use soy milk or coconut milk or rice milk. Just do a trial bake before the party to see if it turns out well and should it be fine then you know all systems are go. If not you may need to tweak the recipe a little to go right for you. Avoid chocolate frosting etc. I think that has milk in it so even trace amounts can cause trouble to those who are allergic. Try doing an orange flavour and when making the frosting use a little orange juice to blend and make the frosting with a dab of pure vegetable margarine. I sure hope this helps you.

Kind regards,

Lisa

P.S. I did an orange cake for my son when he was little and I decorated it with a picture of garfield the cat I drew on the icing with different colours of frosting. He loved it.

Try making a vegan chocolate cake! The kids will love it and not even know there isn't any dairy in it. The following recipe has no dairy and has no banana either.

Vegan Chocolate Cake recipe from AllRecipes:
INGREDIENTS
* 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 cup white sugar
* 1/4 cup cocoa powder
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/3 cup vegetable oil
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
* 1 cup water

DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease one 9x5 inch loaf pan.
2. Sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Add the oil, vanilla, vinegar and water. Mix together until smooth.
3. Pour into prepared pan and bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 45 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool.

Just go vegan! No dairy there...you can substitute any milk ingredients with soy milk and eggs with tofu! There are lots of recipes jst search for "vegan cakes" and you'll find a ton! Jello is made from animal bones and hooves and having a vegan cake is healthy and animal friendly as well!

I have a niece that was allergic to flour (wheat products..she has Celiac). My sister use to make her rice crispie cakes for her b-day. When she got married she even had part of her wedding cake done in a Rice Krispie cake.

Easy to make-cheap to make--easy to decorate and who doesn't love Rice Krispie treats?

For decorating, use either the crisco icing or butter icing.
(For dairy allergies, might wanna check to see if that kid can still have butter. I don't think butter is included in dairy allergies..check with a nurse at the doc's office to make sure.)

There you go. Problem solved. Hope you have a good party!

use substitutes like nuttelex instead of butter it's a dairy free alternative and rice milk or soy milk - probably rice milk - instead of milk. The taste won't vary too much and the kids will love it. If you make it chocolate using cocoa powder it will taste even better. Have a great party

try making a rice krispie cake, cut into squares, and arrange into a tower formation, add a few sparklers for a dazzling effect. Or even a puff wheat cake, do the same thing, kids love it, and it's unique.
