Borrow or buy a timing light. You can buy one for about 20 bucks, but if you know someone with one, it isnt a tool a shade tree mechanic will use alot. Use the instructions on it and go from there. Good luck!!

You can simply buy/borrow a timing light, if that is not available there are other ways around that. First, disconnect the coil wire, take #1 spark plug out, crank engine until piston is at the top of your spark plug hole, and then check your timing pulley. It should be at TDC or a few degrees off. Then loosen the bolt that holds the distributor on, turn distributor to fine tune. If it is not at TDC or a few degrees off then the distributor teeth are off. (-also check fire order of the spark plugs.)

Don't worry about the timing mark for now.

Put it back to TDC #1 and make sure the rotor in the distributor cap #1 plug wire are lined up.

Doublecheck your firing order if you had the plug wires off.

Was the distributor changed recently?..if so my guess is that it's off by one tooth. I would check it and re-install the distributor. Then reset the timing with your timing light.
