In business, I learned to do the 'got cut off' trick.
While YOU are talking, hang up then leave the phone off the hook for a while.
This doesn't give away the fact that you cut them off because you were talking when it happened. Leaving the phone off the hook for a while leads them to believe you have phone trouble when they trie to call back.
Or you can tell her before hand that you phone battery is about dead so "if the phone goes dead, you'll know why - I'll call back when I can"

Just say, "Hey look, I know you want to keep talking, but I am really, really busy and I have so much to do, so I will talk to you some other time." And make sure you do them and be accountable to your word.

Being honest is the best thing you can do, rather than telling a lie.

Hmmm, is that the oven timer going off? Or is it the neighbor at the door? Maybe it's a lost dog in your yard, or perhaps you smell smoke and would like to find out where it's coming from.

set the telephone down quietly, and walk away. If you really want them to take a hint , place the phone over the toilet and give it a good flush then hang up. O.k. maybe thats too rude.
if you know a topic that they particularly dislike, switch conversation to that.

If she is your husband's sister then tell her that you are going to change your husband because of her.
If she is your brother's wife then find another wife for him.

"I have to go to the bathroom, sorry." One it is TMI. Two they will be too embarrassed to say anything but "Oh, okay then, bye."
