I use to have an Italian friend who called his dad "Ba". I have never came across another Italian family that called their dad Ba though. Is this common?

Are you sure it wasn't "pa'", instead? That's common, stands for "papà", Italian for "dad".
"Babbo" is also Italian for "dad", but I never heard it shortened to "ba"...

Hi, I live in Italy. I have never heard father's being adressed as Ba. I have heard "Babbo" (very common in Tuscany) and "Papà" (and a short form of Papà can be "Pa" or "Papi"). Maybe "Ba" is a short form of "Babbo" or maybe your are mistaking it with "Pa". Hope this helps.

It's probably just a personal term of endearment between him and his father but i would venture to guess that it was a variation of pa, papa or father. Instead of pa it was "ba". Just a guess but my bf is Italian and he agrees. Either way it's a cute expression.

My Indian cousins call their dad 'Ba'. At first I thought it was odd, but I've heard it other places, too. I wouldn't go to the extent to say that it's common, but it's not unheard of.

Yea I think it's OK,sounds like a term of endearment which sometimes only makes sense between the two people and to no one else.Maybe his first word was Ba instead of Da and it stuck.Kind of sweet if you ask me.
