I do not know if this will be an adequate answer for you but this is how I look at it,

An embryo has the potential to become a human.
Sperm and eggs in and of themselves alone do not have the potential to become humans. No matter how long you wait a sperm cell with not become a human without an egg. The same goes for a egg it will not develop with out a sperm.
An embryo can be looked at as a early stage human but a sperm alone cannot be viewed as a human.
